Meet the team

Craig Kafko

Craig Kafko

I’m a husband, father, avid sports fan and pizza expert. I received my BA in Psychology from Hunter College in 2004, my doctorate from Hofstra University in 2008 and became a NY State Licensed Psychologist in 2010.

I had a fellowship at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Baldwin, NY where I provided individual and group therapy to patients in the Intensive Outpatient Program and patients in the Partial Hospitalization Program with a wide variety of mental health concerns, including: mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, adjustment disorders, eating disorder, issues related to gender identity, schizoaffective disorders, etc.

I now bring these skills and experiences to my private practice, where I strive to create an environment of trust and comfort for all my patients. I believe in a balance of fun and work, and most of all, I believe in living in the present. Living in the past leads to thoughts of depression and living in the future creates anxiety. Life can be better. Come in and talk it out.

I am a New Yorker, born and raised, a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan and a proud dad. I have a BA from Wesleyan University and a MS in Mental Health Counseling from Manhattan College. I come to therapy from the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and my training has taught me to view my clients through a multicultural lens that acknowledges and values all parts of their identity.  I view therapy as a partnership designed to disentangle life’s complexities on the pathway to wholeness.

My clinical experience has focused on a wide range of mental health concerns such as: personal/generational trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, interpersonal issues and grief. No matter the presented challenge, I help clients purposefully create adaptive coping strategies to bring themselves into better alignment. In sessions I utilize a person-centered approach along with cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic techniques.  Clients experience me as a caring, personable, partner focused on helping to fulfill their identified goals.  Let’s journey together to pinpoint the challenges you face and uncover the means to make your life all that it should be.

Based in Brooklyn, NY and with over eight years in the mental health field (both as a Mental Health Counselor and Psychologist) I recognize that your mental health is about so much more than just what is happening on the inside. My work is rooted in the belief that mental health cannot be addressed in isolation from other aspects of a person's life, such as their physical health, relationships, and community.

My approach to therapy is collaborative, empowering, and client-centered. Rather than simply treating your symptoms, we will work together to address the underlying causes of your mental health concerns and develop a comprehensive, customized treatment plan to address your specific needs for healing and goals for long-term wellness. My integrative practice includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT)—as well as using psychodynamic and mindfulness-based modalities as needed.I have training and experience working with children, adolescents, and adults from a wide variety of cultural, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds and with a range of mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, and trauma. I have received training in LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy and issues related to racial, sexual, gender and neurodiverse identities.

My practice aims to disrupt transgenerational patterns and work together with you to enhance your ability to make choices with more insight, get your needs met, and support you through life’s many uncertainties. All of You is welcome and I will be with you every step of the way!

I'm not just a therapist, I'm a person who loves to laugh, lift heavy things, and dessert!

My professional life has taken me through Fortune 500 environments to small entrepreneurial ventures and almost everything in between.  Clinically, I was trained in a counseling center at the College of Mt. Saint Vincent and Pathways, an in-patient setting focused on bipolar and schizophrenia.  My clinical style is an eclectic mix of relational, psychodynamic, person-centered, and CBT; delivered in a compassionate and direct way.  The classroom has taught me tons, but life continues to teach me that being human is not always easy and that no one orientation, therapy, or approach works for everyone.  I'm a strong believer in the connection between mind and body, so I'm always looking at different ways we can use our physiology to shift our psychology and vice/versa. (mindfulness, breathing, exercise, nutrition). f you are curious about what it may be like working together, we may laugh, we may cry, or you may yell but in the end, we will work together to reach your goals.

I have a Limited Permit from the state of NY as a Mental Health Counselor, a Masters from Manhattan College in Mental Health Counseling, an Executive MBA from Mercy College, and a BS from Syracuse University.

Life is too short to do the heavy lifting alone, so come in and let's chat!

I am a values-driven therapist, guided by my integrity, respect, and curiosity for the human condition. But I'm not just a therapist; I'm a mother, a wife, and a yogi. I also used to be a professional skydiver, so I'm no stranger to taking risks, and it is not lost on me that seeking therapy is a daunting process. I received my MA in Mental Health Counseling from New York University in 2020 and my BA in communications from Michigan State University in 2002.

Prior to becoming a therapist I worked in corporate marketing and advertising throughout the technology and financial services industries. Throughout my career, I found myself burning out, which led me from one high-pressure environment after another in search of fulfillment that I was unable to attain. I know how difficult it can be to feel stuck and desire a big change while also fearing it. Through my own personal exploration I learned that it's never too late to make a change, especially when it holds the possibility of a better future.

As as psychotherapist, I take a collaborative approach in my work with individuals, couples and groups to create a judgment-free environment that is the catalyst for change. I regard my clients as the experts in their own lives, while providing compassionate acceptance. I'm a firm believer that healing takes place when you feel safe and respected.

I am a firm believer in every individual’s innate worthiness and our ability to heal not only through supportive relationships with others, but through our relationships with ourselves. I strive to create a safe, inclusionary, non-judgmental space where we can collaborate and explore whatever comes up together.

After a 14-year career in the financial industry, I received my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University. In addition to my therapy work, I have had the opportunity to previously volunteer with the National Eating Disorders Association and currently volunteer with Crime Victims Treatment Center as a rape and domestic violence advocate. In the therapy room, I work from a trauma-informed, person-centered approach, utilizing some psychodynamic principles and incorporate CBT and DBT skills when needed.

As your therapist, I am committed to meeting you where you are and creating a space together where you feel safe to show up and be honest with yourself. Exploring what is and is not working for you and what you want from yourself and from life. I have experience working with complex and co-morbid disorders as well as eating disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression.

An avid believer in mindfulness, I believe that life is best lived in the present moment. After completing my B.A. in Psychology, I went on to receive a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University. Through my clinical experience I have worked with a range of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, grief, and issues related to gender identity and sexuality.

I view the relationship between therapist and client as the foundation of the therapeutic process. I strive to create a safe and collaborative space where every client is encouraged to be their most authentic and genuine self. My approach to therapy is person-centered and modified to meet the needs of each individual client. I utilize an integration of techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy to help clients achieve their unique goals. I work with clients as they develop new skills and support them as they transfer these skills to their daily lives.

I believe that every person has the capacity for growth and change. As your counselor, I will be here to listen and support you on your journey of self-discovery and growth. You don’t have to do it alone, so come on in and let’s talk it out!
